Lo1 - legal issues research task.

Which legal issues and regulator bodies need to be considered when producing different types of media products?

The show 'Friends' is a 10 part series in which was aired from September 22nd 1994 to May 6th 2004. 

Legal issues that would have to be considered during the production of 'Friends' would be location permission & reece forms, location permission forms would be used to ensure that the company would have permission to film in certain areas that are not set up in a studio such as outdoor locations, reece forms give confirmation to the producers and actors that these locations are safe to film in as they can't risk having anyone being injured, secondly the producers of friends would need to consider using the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act to ensure that the key elements of the show such as character appearances, names of characters don’t get stolen by another company as this could lead to friends being less poplar due to other shows stealing it's ideas as it'd make the show less unique, therefore decreasing it's popularity, this would also lead to a potential reduction in profit towards the producers of 'friends' as a more niche audience would be watching, this act would also allow the creators of the property used in 'Freinds' to be able to control how another company uses their property if they do give permission to do so, for example when the friends logo was used on t-shits in Primark, the production company would have controlled how this product was made / produced.

Regulators 'OFCOM' would have been involved during the production of 'Freinds' to ensure that the programme and episodes are suitable to the audience in which friends is targeted at, that being males and females aged around 16-40 years old, they'd do the by making sure the language and visual aspects aren't too graphical as the age range in which the show is targeted at has a fairly large gap therefore the show needs to be suitable to a range of different people of different ages.

Ethical issues that are relevant to the production of friends would be body images and representation of people, for example making sure the denoted characters on the show are of different sizes & shapes, ethnicity and so on, as if these ethical issues were not used, this would connote to the audience that there is only one certain body image in which is acceptable to have in todays society to be accepted, which is morally wrong as people can't help their physical appearance. 
This social media campaign was produced by Nike and it's message is that if Colin Kaepernick could make a difference and stand up for what he believes then you can too, even if means sacrificing everything.

legal issues that would've been considered during the production of this Nike campaign will have been Intellectual property rights, this act will have been used to ensure that the well-known Nike logo cannot be used by any other companies, therefore protecting the brand from other companies trying to fraud people into buying fake Nike products as Nike will have the right to take this product maker to court if this is done and can claim their products  or stop the business from making these products, this act has also helped the brand gain popularity as when you see the logo you instantly associate it with the brand Nike, this is due to the fact that no one else has the right to use Nike's signature logo.

Regulators ASA would have been involved during the production of this campaign to ensure that the advert is family and child friendly, as this advert / campaign was distributed over various different media channels such as on posters, billboards, on social medias, websites and so on, therefore a mass audience of all age ranges will be exposed to seeing this advert, so the advert can't include explicit or graphic images and language due to this possibly having a negative effect of a more impressionable younger audience.

Ethical issues that would have to bee considered during the production of this campaign would be the use of disturbing imagery and offensive materials, due to the fact that the campaign was distributed in public areas where anyone of any age can see it, therefore no disturbing images or language should be used as this can have a negative effect on impressionable people. Secondly any language or imagery is interpreted as morally wrong, for example slandering a certain sexuality or ethnicity, members of the public could be extremely offended, therefore these ethical issues ensure that language like this cannot be used.

68 year old Annie Leibovitz is a very famous photographer who has photographed various different iconic celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Leonardo Dicaprio, the link above leads to a collection of her work.

Legal issues that Annie will need to use when doing her photoshoots would be ones such as making her clients sign release and consent forms, especially due to the fact that she works with very highly recognised people, therefore these forms will ensure that Annie can photograph her models with permission and proof to do so, as these forms request / require the clients signature for confirmation that the client is happy to be photographed, therefore if the client for some reason claims that they did not want to be photographed Annie will have the documents and proof to show that this is a lie.

Regulators W3C would have been involved in the production / publishing of these photos due to the fact that Annie has distributed a range of her photos onto a collection online, and W3C regulate websites / give guidance and advice, therefore this regulator would've helped Annie post her collection so that it is suitable to a mass audience due to this website being accessible by anyone of any age, and secondly the regulators would have ensured that the photo's don't include any elements in which would be seen as controversial or wrong.

Ethical issues that would take place when producing these photos would be, making sure that poses requested by Annie are ethically acceptable, for example not sexualizing younger models, secondly body image and representation of people would have to be used due to the fact that Annie is a very popular, famous photographer, therefore her wok gets around and influences a lot of people, therefore she will have to photograph a range of different people of different races and sizes, to tell her audience that it's acceptable to be yourself, she'll also have to use these ethical issues to ensure that she isn't putting out the wrong message of what an ideal self is to her audience, for example if she photographs a model who is dangerously thin but is seen as an ideal self, this would be putting out a morally wrong message as impressionable people would try to look like this, creating mental and physical health problems for these people. 

The incredible's 2 is an animated movie that was released on the 13th of July 2018, it grossed $504.382 million within it's first 24 days of release.

Legal issues that would have had to be used to release this product would have been the copyrights, patents and designs act, due to the fact that this act allow's the producers to take someone to court if another company uses any elements such as characters from the film, Intellectual property rights will have also been applied to the intellectual property in the film (such as characters and logos) to ensure that these elements can't be used by any other person / production company without permission, these specific characters are the reason that the audience want to watch the film, therefore if someone else uses elements from the film without permission they will get undeserved attention and recognition due to the popularity of the characters people will be interested in the product, so this act allows the rightful owners of the property to be able to take the thieves of their property to court, resulting in potential large fines of up to £50,000 or even imprisonment for up to 6 months.

Regulators BBFC would have been involved in the production of the film Incredibles 2 to ensure that the film is suitable to the audience in which the film is targeted at, that being a mass family audience, therefore the film would have to be regulated with a rating that attracts the target audience, this rating could be a U or a PG, the film in the end was rated a PG due to it not consisting of any explicit language or graphic scenes therefore the desired audience was targeted.

Ethical issues that would be used during the production of The Incredibles 2 would be ones such as  disturbing imagery and offensive materials, due to the fact that the incredible two attracts a very large audience, it is extremely important that no offensive messages such ass racism are conveyed within the film as impressionable children may think this is an acceptable thing to do when it's morally not, secondly no disturbing imagery should be used as this can have a huge impact on a young child, for example if a graphical scene of something in which is seen as morally wrong such as someone getting bullied for their sexuality or race is shown, this would again reinforce the message that this behaviour is ok which us not an acceptable message to portray to an audience.  


Capital FM is a radio show in which broadcasts in the UK, it has multiple features such as videos, interviews, news, huge prizes and giveaways, quiz's and so on.

Legal issues that would be used by Capital FM would be ones such as Libel and Slander acts, due to the fact that Capital is a radio show, you;re constantly listening to people talking about subjects such as the news, therefore the libel and slander act ensure people that they're hearing the truth about what is going on and aren't being told false information, secondly Capital FM will have used the intellectual property rights to ensure that no other production company will steal their radio name, and names for other shows though out the day such as 'Saturday Capital Breakfast' and logos and slogans for the show and different events in which the run. Captial FM will also gave to use release and consent forms and brand permission when doing features on their show as they will need consent from people / companies to confirm that they're happy to be featured on the show.

Regulators 'OFCOM' will be part of the production process for broadcasting Capital FM's shows as this radio show has to be suitable to people of all ages due to it being broadcasted on the radio where anyone could hear it, therefore OFCOM would analyse the scripts that the hosts use and base their shows on, they'd make sure that no explicit language was used as this could have a negative impact on an impressionable younger audience.

Capital FM would use ethical issues such as representation of people, for example due to the fact that the show is a radio show in which is broadcasted to a mass audience, the show can have huge influence on a large variety of people, therefore if negative representations of people of different ethnicities, size, shape, sexuality and so on are used, this would not only offend many people as they'd been conscious about themselves due to others having morally wrong opinions on them but this could also have a negative impact on the way others think about others appearances and beliefs, therefore these legal issues will prevent radio hosts from using offensive language, as even if they do have a morally wrong opinion they will not be allowed to voice it.

The first River dale graphic novel was recently published in 2017, this comic series is based off of the old original 'Archie' comics and the new series on Netflix called River dale.

Legal issues that would have to be used during the production these novels would be firstly reviving permission from the original Archie comics author and publisher and the Netflix Riverdale series producers o base the graphic novel off of these productions, this could be done via: email, text, physical meetings, phone calls etc, the confirmation would also most likely have to be recorded down on documents such as permission form, secondly legal issues such as the copyrights, patents and design acts will have been used during the production of these graphic novels to ensure that no other companies are able to copy the layout /design and characters from the comic, this act would also have been used due to the fact that this novel is based off of a Netflix online series and therefore the producers of these comics would have had to get controlled permission from the original producer of Riverdale to create the novels, therefore anyone else who wants to use ideas from this novel or the series will have to be granted controlled permission as Riverdale is extremely popular and the producers wont want other brands messing around with the representations of the novels and show, secondly intellectual property rights will have been used to make sure elements such as the same 'Riverdale' text on the front of the novels is unable to be copied by others.

Regulators such as OFCOM and W3C would have to be used during the production of this media product due to the fact that the novel will be distributed over various different platforms such as on websites or podcast, these elements are media channels in which OFCOM and W3C regulate therefore these regulators would need to be involved to ensure that the novel is suitable for the desired target audience.

Ethical issues that would have been used within the production of the Riverdale graphic novels would be representations of people, for example the characters in the novel should be of all different races, size's, sexuality's, beliefs and so on, due to the fact that using a range of different characters educates the audience on the fact that you should be accepted no matter what your appearance or beliefs are, this is especially important due to the fact that the target audience for these novels is of a younger audience (teenagers), who are more impressionable and likely to base opinions on people.
