Mock questions / revision.

Identify three client requirements based on the brief for montage digital games.
  1. To produce an education game.
  2. The game has to be accessible on tables and smart phones.
  3. The game has to be ready for the start of summer.
What does each of the above roles include and contribute to a team? Which other job role would each need to work with? Why?

A graphic designer job role includes being very multi-functional as they are responsible  for the visuals / layout of the product. Such as: Environments, levels and characters. Logos / "branding", font styles, house style colours, photography / graphics. They contribute to the team as within out visuals there would be no visual attraction to a product, they help bring ideas to life. A graphic designer would have to work with a market researcher, this is due to the fact that a graphic designer would have to base the assets they make off of the research that is provided to make the product suitable for the discovered target audience.

A coder's job role includes being responsible for programming different types of medias / products. Such as: websites, games, apps and interactive products. A coder contributes to the team as without them the product would not be able to function or allow customers to interact with it.  Coders would typically have to work with other job roles such as a graphic designer so that they can code the asset / media product that the graphic designer has created.

A researcher's job role includes collecting crucial information that discovers what conventions are suitable for the target audience and so on, this contributes to a team greatly as this research is the foundation to creating a product. A researcher would have to work with other job roles such as a camera crew to possibly record / film primary research such as blue sky thinking or interviews.

A presenter's job role includes being responsible for hosting the media product and also being the main representative of the media product, meaning they will typically have their face on the product and be held responsible for most things. A presenter contributes to a team as they can direct people and make the media product reflective of the target audience and brand. A presenter would typically have to work with other jib roles such as a DJ, Director or a Script Writer due to the fact tht a DJ can add SFX and music to help represent what the presenter may be talking about better, the director would help them understand what they have to do and the script writer would let them know what needs to be said  done.

Explain how one client requirement may effect the work that Astrid has to complete.

The time frame that the team have to complete the app may effect the work that Astrid has to complete since he may not be able to achieve his full potential when it comes to creating the assets due to the limited amount of time given.

Another client requirement that may affect the work that Asrid does may be the fact that the client wants the graphics to be educational. However, the target audience is of 70-10 year olds, therefore this may be a problem and affect Astrids work as educational images stereotypical don't appeal to this demographic.

Identify and explain two potential legal issues based on the breif.
How could one of these legal issues be resolved?

  • Montage Digital Games.
Due to the fact that the Children History museum want the game to include information about the kings and queens in Tudor England, they have to ensure that they get all this information correct and can't talk badly upon them as this could be seen as libel which is a legal issue.

Secondly, since the target audience are between 7-10 years old, the data protection act will have to be applied to the game as it will be interactive meaning the children may submit personal information such as their age and name etc.

Montage Digital could resolve one of these legal issues (libel) by ensuring that they get a trusted researcher to gather correct information on kings and queens of Tudor England.
  • Raven
A legal issue would be that the 'Groups of learners' who are to be featured in the promotional video may not give their consent to be filmed. Meaning if they were unhappy with being in the video, they could take the company to court and sue them.

Secondly, the producers also want the promotional video to include cutaways of local areas. However, some of these properties may have owners. Meaning the owners would have to give Raven consent to film their property. If the owners haven't given consent for their property to be filmed  they can take the company to court and sue them.

Both of these legal issues can be resolved via the use of Release and consent forms as they gather permission from people to be filmed and in the production of the promotional video. Location recce forms should be used to get permission of property owners.

  • Welsh Mocha
Due to the fact that Welsh Mocha are entering a very competitive market and feel as though their logo needs to resemble other well-known coffee businesses / rise above them. Aspects of copyright could be a problem. As other companies may feel as though their ideas have been stolen due to the similarities between coffee companies.

Secondly, possible Libel legal issues could occur due to the fact that Welsh Mocha said they're looking to rise above all other coffee companies within the local area, meaning they could possibly mimic other businesses ideas or  compare other companies products to theirs.

To resolve the copyright issue, I would have to ensure that I don't represent any other existing businesses within the logo. Yet still get the conventions and theme of a stereotypical 'coffee shop' logo.

Identify and explain two potential ethical issues based on the breif.
How could one of these ethical issues be resolved?

  • Montage digital games
The first potential ethical issue could be use of offensive materials. This is due to the fact that the producers want the game to consist of images, sound effects and speech to help the children understand facts. However, if these image, SFX or audio consist of any explicit language or graphic imagery this would be seen as wrong within society due to 7-10 year olds being impressionable meaning they could influence bad behavior or even traumatize a child.

Secondly, there could potentially be a representation of people ethical issue as Montage Digital want the game to appeal to a range of cultural groups. However, there were not very many people of colour or different ethnicities due to racism and slavery in the Tudor England era. Therefore, it may be hard to include characters from different ethnicities and backgrounds. This may spark people to feel excluded or offended especially if they are young, leaving them feeling self conscious and so on.

The use of offensive materials ethical issue could be resolved by ensuring that the game is regulated by ASA as they will declare whether the game is suitable for the 7-10 year old target audience or not.
  • Raven
The first potential ethical issue would be representation of people and boy image due to the fact that they want the promotional video to feature a group of people, therefore depending on what type of models they decide to use it may or may not cause ethical issues about the representation of people.

The second potential ethical issue could be making sure that the promotional video is available to watch in different languages as if it is only in English this could make people who don't speak English as their first language feel excluded.

The representation of people and boy image could be reolved by making sure they include a range of different models who have different and realistic bod shapes and also ensuring that people of different ethicnicites, skin tones and so on are included.

Identify two regulatory issues we need to be aware of and explain why they could cause issues.

Community Live!
Due to the fact that Community Live is a radio station that is broadcasted during the day, everything within it has to be suitable for a mass family audience. Meaning no explicit language or inappropriate behavior can be demonstrated within the show. Therefore, regulatory issues that the Host's / Staff of Community Live! need to be aware of are one such as not using explicit or inappropriate language (that including not playing explicit music / jingles). Other wise, issues could occur such as impressionable children using explicit language or acting inappropriately.

Another regulatory issue is that the Logo must not include any graphic imagery within it as this may not only have a negative affect on impressionable children but also attract the wrong target audience and sponsorship.

A production meeting is needed to discuss early design ideas but Harris cannot make it. What pre production document can be used to feedback ideas to Harris?

Due to the fact that Harris codes products based off designs, a visualization diagram could be used to feedback ideas to Harris. Since Harris is an experienced coder, it will be easy for him to understand what coding needs to be done simply just from an image.

Identify two activities that would need to be completed to make a promotional video. Explain the importance of each.

Due to the fact that the producers for Raven want their promotional video to include a 'group of learners', activities such as requesting these people to sign a release and consent form would need to take place. This activity is important as without release and consent forms, you have no evidence to prove that you had your actors / models gave permission to be in the video. Therefore, you could potentially be taken to court / sued if someone decides they don't want to be a part of the production anymore as they could say they didn't give their consent, to which you'd have no evidence to prove they're lying.

Secondly, due to the fact that the producers want to include cutaway scenes of areas that are local to Raven's cinema, you'd have to do activities such as requesting permission from property owners to ensure they feel comfortable with having their property in the video. This activity is very important because if the property is private, location recce forms will ensure that you can still film there. Like the release an consent forms, if you don't gain permission from land owners, then you could be take to court or sued. As someone could say they didn't give you permission to film on their property, to which you'd have no proof to say they're lying.

Explain a contingency for one of your activities above.

If permission to film on private property is not granted by the owners, a contingency could be simply filming in public areas, as you're legally allowed to film in public areas without permission (such as fields etc). The producers want the promotional video to cut to local areas, however they didn't specify what type of surroundings, meaning filming in public areas would work.

Identify two secondary research methods that could be used to re-design welsh mochas logo and explain why each would be useful.

Researching into other companies who create similar products and have the same target audience as Welsh Mocha would be a good source of secondary research to consider using to re-design the logo. Due to the fact that: if these other companies are creating similar products to you whilst attracting your desired target audience, looking into the designs and style within their logos may help you to understand the key conventions in which help connote what products are being sold and what audience is being targeted. Allowing you to use this knowledge to create a more suitable logo for Welsh Mocha's target audience and theme.

Another source of secondary research that could be used to help Welsh Mocha re-design their logo could be: reading previous feedback and reviews online for different coffee shop logo designs, written by people of different ages. This would help Welsh Mocha understand what colours, fonts and styles people between the ages of 17- 40 prefer, allowing the graphic designer to add elements that appeal to both late teens and adults.

Idenify two methods Justin could use to help the team research information about suitable visuals for the game app.

Justin could use methods such as creating surveys / questionnaires for the target audience to complete based on what they'd like to see within the game, this would help Harris, Astrid and Justin as surveys give qualitative data. Due to the fact that every job role is based around visuals, this source of  primary research is relative and helpful to everyone.

Secondly, Justin could look into what conventions other games with a similar target audience consist of. Such as their narrative, theme, and visuals. Helping give understanding on what is typical / suitable for games of their target audience and genre.

Identify two methods Carl could use to help the team research information to help them design the new logo and house style of the new channel.

Carl could use methods such as asking the target audience to complete a questionnaire / survey based on what sort of themes, styles and deigns they like. This would help Bauer understand their target audiences preferences, especially due to the fact that surveys give qualitative data. Allowing Bauer to cater their new channel to a design that would appeal to their target audience.

Secondly, Carl could interview people. This would be useful as you can ask probing questions within interviews, meaning you get qualitative data due to the flowing conversation-like nature. You can also explain exactly what it is your asking in detail to help the audience understand the questions you're asking. Whereas, on surveys there could be a problem with feedback being untrue to the audiences preferences if they don't understand what you're asking.
