Mock questions / revision.

Identify three client requirements based on the brief for montage digital games.
  1. To produce an education game.
  2. The game has to be accessible on tables and smart phones.
  3. The game has to be ready for the start of summer.
What does each of the above roles include and contribute to a team? Which other job role would each need to work with? Why?

A graphic designer job role includes being very multi-functional as they are responsible  for the visuals / layout of the product. Such as: Environments, levels and characters. Logos / "branding", font styles, house style colours, photography / graphics. They contribute to the team as within out visuals there would be no visual attraction to a product, they help bring ideas to life. A graphic designer would have to work with a market researcher, this is due to the fact that a graphic designer would have to base the assets they make off of the research that is provided to make the product suitable for the discovered target audience.

A coder's job role includes being responsible for programming different types of medias / products. Such as: websites, games, apps and interactive products. A coder contributes to the team as without them the product would not be able to function or allow customers to interact with it.  Coders would typically have to work with other job roles such as a graphic designer so that they can code the asset / media product that the graphic designer has created.

A researcher's job role includes collecting crucial information that discovers what conventions are suitable for the target audience and so on, this contributes to a team greatly as this research is the foundation to creating a product. A researcher would have to work with other job roles such as a camera crew to possibly record / film primary research such as blue sky thinking or interviews.

A presenter's job role includes being responsible for hosting the media product and also being the main representative of the media product, meaning they will typically have their face on the product and be held responsible for most things. A presenter contributes to a team as they can direct people and make the media product reflective of the target audience and brand. A presenter would typically have to work with other jib roles such as a DJ, Director or a Script Writer due to the fact tht a DJ can add SFX and music to help represent what the presenter may be talking about better, the director would help them understand what they have to do and the script writer would let them know what needs to be said  done.

Explain how one client requirement may effect the work that Astrid has to complete.

The time frame that the team have to complete the app may effect the work that Astrid has to complete since he may not be able to achieve his full potential when it comes to creating the assets due to the limited amount of time given.

Another client requirement that may affect the work that Asrid does may be the fact that the client wants the graphics to be educational. However, the target audience is of 70-10 year olds, therefore this may be a problem and affect Astrids work as educational images stereotypical don't appeal to this demographic.

Identify and explain two potential legal issues based on the breif.
How could one of these legal issues be resolved?

  • Montage Digital Games.
Due to the fact that the Children History museum want the game to include information about the kings and queens in Tudor England, they have to ensure that they get all this information correct and can't talk badly upon them as this could be seen as libel which is a legal issue.

Secondly, since the target audience are between 7-10 years old, the data protection act will have to be applied to the game as it will be interactive meaning the children may submit personal information such as their age and name etc.

Montage Digital could resolve one of these legal issues (libel) by ensuring that they get a trusted researcher to gather correct information on kings and queens of Tudor England.
  • Raven
A legal issue would be that the 'Groups of learners' who are to be featured in the promotional video may not give their consent to be filmed. Meaning if they were unhappy with being in the video, they could take the company to court and sue them.

Secondly, the producers also want the promotional video to include cutaways of local areas. However, some of these properties may have owners. Meaning the owners would have to give Raven consent to film their property. If the owners haven't given consent for their property to be filmed  they can take the company to court and sue them.

Both of these legal issues can be resolved via the use of Release and consent forms as they gather permission from people to be filmed and in the production of the promotional video. Location recce forms should be used to get permission of property owners.

  • Welsh Mocha
Due to the fact that Welsh Mocha are entering a very competitive market and feel as though their logo needs to resemble other well-known coffee businesses / rise above them. Aspects of copyright could be a problem. As other companies may feel as though their ideas have been stolen due to the similarities between coffee companies.

Secondly, possible Libel legal issues could occur due to the fact that Welsh Mocha said they're looking to rise above all other coffee companies within the local area, meaning they could possibly mimic other businesses ideas or  compare other companies products to theirs.

To resolve the copyright issue, I would have to ensure that I don't represent any other existing businesses within the logo. Yet still get the conventions and theme of a stereotypical 'coffee shop' logo.

Identify and explain two potential ethical issues based on the breif.
How could one of these ethical issues be resolved?

  • Montage digital games
The first potential ethical issue could be use of offensive materials. This is due to the fact that the producers want the game to consist of images, sound effects and speech to help the children understand facts. However, if these image, SFX or audio consist of any explicit language or graphic imagery this would be seen as wrong within society due to 7-10 year olds being impressionable meaning they could influence bad behavior or even traumatize a child.

Secondly, there could potentially be a representation of people ethical issue as Montage Digital want the game to appeal to a range of cultural groups. However, there were not very many people of colour or different ethnicities due to racism and slavery in the Tudor England era. Therefore, it may be hard to include characters from different ethnicities and backgrounds. This may spark people to feel excluded or offended especially if they are young, leaving them feeling self conscious and so on.

The use of offensive materials ethical issue could be resolved by ensuring that the game is regulated by ASA as they will declare whether the game is suitable for the 7-10 year old target audience or not.
  • Raven
The first potential ethical issue would be representation of people and boy image due to the fact that they want the promotional video to feature a group of people, therefore depending on what type of models they decide to use it may or may not cause ethical issues about the representation of people.

The second potential ethical issue could be making sure that the promotional video is available to watch in different languages as if it is only in English this could make people who don't speak English as their first language feel excluded.

The representation of people and boy image could be reolved by making sure they include a range of different models who have different and realistic bod shapes and also ensuring that people of different ethicnicites, skin tones and so on are included.

Identify two regulatory issues we need to be aware of and explain why they could cause issues.

Community Live!
Due to the fact that Community Live is a radio station that is broadcasted during the day, everything within it has to be suitable for a mass family audience. Meaning no explicit language or inappropriate behavior can be demonstrated within the show. Therefore, regulatory issues that the Host's / Staff of Community Live! need to be aware of are one such as not using explicit or inappropriate language (that including not playing explicit music / jingles). Other wise, issues could occur such as impressionable children using explicit language or acting inappropriately.

Another regulatory issue is that the Logo must not include any graphic imagery within it as this may not only have a negative affect on impressionable children but also attract the wrong target audience and sponsorship.

A production meeting is needed to discuss early design ideas but Harris cannot make it. What pre production document can be used to feedback ideas to Harris?

Due to the fact that Harris codes products based off designs, a visualization diagram could be used to feedback ideas to Harris. Since Harris is an experienced coder, it will be easy for him to understand what coding needs to be done simply just from an image.

Identify two activities that would need to be completed to make a promotional video. Explain the importance of each.

Due to the fact that the producers for Raven want their promotional video to include a 'group of learners', activities such as requesting these people to sign a release and consent form would need to take place. This activity is important as without release and consent forms, you have no evidence to prove that you had your actors / models gave permission to be in the video. Therefore, you could potentially be taken to court / sued if someone decides they don't want to be a part of the production anymore as they could say they didn't give their consent, to which you'd have no evidence to prove they're lying.

Secondly, due to the fact that the producers want to include cutaway scenes of areas that are local to Raven's cinema, you'd have to do activities such as requesting permission from property owners to ensure they feel comfortable with having their property in the video. This activity is very important because if the property is private, location recce forms will ensure that you can still film there. Like the release an consent forms, if you don't gain permission from land owners, then you could be take to court or sued. As someone could say they didn't give you permission to film on their property, to which you'd have no proof to say they're lying.

Explain a contingency for one of your activities above.

If permission to film on private property is not granted by the owners, a contingency could be simply filming in public areas, as you're legally allowed to film in public areas without permission (such as fields etc). The producers want the promotional video to cut to local areas, however they didn't specify what type of surroundings, meaning filming in public areas would work.

Identify two secondary research methods that could be used to re-design welsh mochas logo and explain why each would be useful.

Researching into other companies who create similar products and have the same target audience as Welsh Mocha would be a good source of secondary research to consider using to re-design the logo. Due to the fact that: if these other companies are creating similar products to you whilst attracting your desired target audience, looking into the designs and style within their logos may help you to understand the key conventions in which help connote what products are being sold and what audience is being targeted. Allowing you to use this knowledge to create a more suitable logo for Welsh Mocha's target audience and theme.

Another source of secondary research that could be used to help Welsh Mocha re-design their logo could be: reading previous feedback and reviews online for different coffee shop logo designs, written by people of different ages. This would help Welsh Mocha understand what colours, fonts and styles people between the ages of 17- 40 prefer, allowing the graphic designer to add elements that appeal to both late teens and adults.

Idenify two methods Justin could use to help the team research information about suitable visuals for the game app.

Justin could use methods such as creating surveys / questionnaires for the target audience to complete based on what they'd like to see within the game, this would help Harris, Astrid and Justin as surveys give qualitative data. Due to the fact that every job role is based around visuals, this source of  primary research is relative and helpful to everyone.

Secondly, Justin could look into what conventions other games with a similar target audience consist of. Such as their narrative, theme, and visuals. Helping give understanding on what is typical / suitable for games of their target audience and genre.

Identify two methods Carl could use to help the team research information to help them design the new logo and house style of the new channel.

Carl could use methods such as asking the target audience to complete a questionnaire / survey based on what sort of themes, styles and deigns they like. This would help Bauer understand their target audiences preferences, especially due to the fact that surveys give qualitative data. Allowing Bauer to cater their new channel to a design that would appeal to their target audience.

Secondly, Carl could interview people. This would be useful as you can ask probing questions within interviews, meaning you get qualitative data due to the flowing conversation-like nature. You can also explain exactly what it is your asking in detail to help the audience understand the questions you're asking. Whereas, on surveys there could be a problem with feedback being untrue to the audiences preferences if they don't understand what you're asking.

Lo4 - Site structure diagram.

What is a site structure diagram?
  • A site structure diagram is a diagram that represents the navigation for the 'end user' when using an interactive product
Examples of an interactive product:
  • Website
  • Game
  • App
Job roles relevant to the planning of a website:
  • Graphic designer
  • Coder / programmer.

KEY TERMS
Breadcrumb trail - everything is connected, things leading you to different places. Shows how the user is going to navigate around the page.
Sub page - The page you go to after clicking a hyper link.
Navigation - how the audience get around the page.
Hierarchical structure - The 'higher up' the element the more important it is.
End user - the audience / consumer.
Site map - represents / plans the navigation of the website.
Example of a site map:

Stand out features of a mind map
  • Headings  - 'About' is the first, 'contact' is the last, 'home' is always at the top.
  • Hyperlinks / buttons - On logos, buttons, images - link everything together.
  • Layout - everything is connected due to the 'breadcrumb trails'
  • Home page - the 'trunk'. All pages are linked to the home page. It's the first thing the end user sees.
Around the site map you need to add the nots that a graphic designer would add.

Website homepage notes.

CONVENTIONS OF A WEBSITE HOMEPAGE.
  • The footer

- banner at the bottom of a website.
- includes social media links, customer services .etc.
- giving audience various ways to interact with the company.

  • Hyperlinks.

- Seen on assets such as images, logos, buttons .etc.

Guide to getting full marks on the drawing question.
  • Annotate
  • Label what it is
  • How does it benefit the audience and purpose
  • Design features.

Lo4 - Drawing questions.

A visualisation diagram is a sketch that represents the layout of a product.

Products that would require a visualisation diagram as a planning document would be ones such as magazines, posters, leaflets, websites or app (home screen / page), CD or DVD cover, a level for a game.

Example of website and app home screens:

Common features denoted:
  • Logo.( At the top of the page, largest form of text, represents the brand and product)
  • Different manual options (home, notifications, profile, upload, search)
  • House style colours. (reflect the genre / theme of the product.)
  • Hyperlinks (interactive buttons, allow you too navigate the app / website)
  • Font (represents the genre / theme of the product)
When labelling your visualisation diagram list the connotations, annotations and denotations of all assets within your drawing.
How are your assets going to appeal to your audience / benefit them? e.g. if the target audience was of both males and females you should use colours such as black and white as they are gender neutral to appeal to both groups of people.

If you had to draw a design for an app draw the phone within the box.
You're getting marks for content, fitness of purpose and use of annotations.

  • Content
what your visualisation diagram includes. e.g. has it got a logo? slogan? or buttons? Does it look like the product and have you includes key features.
  • Fitness for purpose
Just like with content, this one is about the features of what you have drawn being relevant to the brief / scenario.
  • Annotations
Making detailed notes to explain elements such as the house style, why it appeals to the target audience and the brief. (you wouldn't have to add notes or arrows with notes to documents such as storyboards as they include them within the document).

Lo4 - Job roles.

  • Film & TV advert (video based)

Director.
Camera crew.
Editor.
Actors / model.

  • Magazine (print based)

Journalist.
Graphic designer.
Photographer

  • Game (interactive product)

Key job roles:
Programmer / coder.
Graphic designer.
Market researcher. ^

  • Radio programme (audio based)

Presenter. - Talking, DJ, songs,  SFX,  jingles
Technical engineer. ^
Researcher. - local artist, sponsorship adverts.

Multi-functional people are commonly seen in smaller independent companies as it's cost effective. For example, a camera person could also take part in editing as they will typically have experience within both elements. Graphic designers would typically participate in organising the photoshoot and other relating activities, as well as the layout and digital elements. This is due to their experience in handling and working with visuals.

Key job roles.

  • Graphic designer.

A graphic designer is responsible for the visuals / layout of the product. Such as: Environments, levels and characters. Logos / "branding", font styles, house style colours, photography / graphics.

Documents such as visualisation diagrams would be used to help graphic designers plan visuals as they represent the layout of the product, they also show annotations, denotations connotations to understand key messages and reasoning as to why everything is the way it is.
They would also use Call sheets to remind them of resources and tasks in which need to be completed in order to compose the product.

Graphic designers would stereotypically have qualifications based on art, design or photography, meaning they can be multi-functional and are therefore cost effective which is beneficial for smaller independent companies.

  • Camera person / crew.

A camera person films footage for video productions. Camera people need to have an understanding of cinematography i.e. angles and shot types. They also need to have experience and skills with a range of camera equipment. Such as: tripods, lighting, cameras, lenses.

Camera people would stereotypically have qualifications in film or other relating subjects. Such as: A-level photography, media production, film + TV production.

  • Coder / Programmer

A programmer codes media products. Coders use different languages in order to programme different products. HTML is used to create functions, LSS is used for design. Coders need to have experience / knowledge on how to code a range of different products such as websites, apps, games and interactive products.

Coders stereotypically have qualifications in subjects such as computer science as a degree or A-level or high-tier I.T.

Lo3 - Pre production and planning forms.

Once a production schedule is created other forms are needed depending on what you're making, such as:

- release and content forms.

- location permission forms.

- Call sheet.

Release and consent forms are legal contracts shown by the signature at the
bottom of the page, they're used to get permission from models that confirms they agree to being photographed / be a part of the project and have the product distributed.

Based on this example the main three main sections included within a release and consent form is: confirming who the model is, an explanation of the the agreement and a signature from the model.
Legal issues that could be faced without this form is that the company / photographer could be sued due to no proof of confirmation by the model if they suddenly decided they didn't want to participate on the project anymore. Ethical issues that may be faced without the existence of this form would be that the models may not fully understand the extent in what they have to do due to no explanation / agreement being shown therefore they may feel uncomftable when it comes to the actual photoshoot, they could also sue to company for deformation of character due to this.

Location permission forms are legal contracts, they're used to confirm permission to be / film in a location form the owner of the property.
The location permission forms have similarities to the release and consent forms due to them both being legal contracts and the fact that you're gaining someones permission for something.
The person who would sign this form would be the person who owns, manages or is responsible for the property.

Call sheets are used to inform people working on the project all information in which is relevant to a particular activity within the project such as a photoshoot, they must be given to cast & crew before the event takes place.

call sheets can be used for productions such as films, magazines, games. Everybody involved within the project has to have a call sheet due to it being relevant to everyone as it includes elements from all different sectors such as makeup, costumes, actors, camera crew etc..Call sheets would be needed to be given to these people before the production starts so that everyone is prepared and know what resources need to be gathered.

Lo3 recap.

Production schedule

production schedules are used to plan the production of a product.

  • include:

- milestones
- timeframes
- dates
- contingencies
- names of tasks

  • advantages:

- easy to read
- relevant to everyone
- factors in delays (contingencies)
- adaptable / east to edit
- cost effective

Gantt chart

gantt chart Is a type of production schedule that plans out the entire project from start to finish.

  • advantages:

- visual representation  of what needs to be done
- clear time frames

  • disadvantages:

- doesn't tell you how to compete the tasks.

the different between a production schedule and a Gantt chart is that Gantt charts are only made once as they plan the project from start to finish. However, a production schedule would be done alot more frequently than a Gantt chart such as one a week for interin deadines (things that need to be done by that week).

A gantt chart would be done first to them planning out the entirety of the project, production schedules would be created after as they will be based off different tasks that need to be computed from the Gantt chart within a certain Tim frame such as a week.

everyone will be able to see and access production schedules due to them being relevant to everyone as everyone needs to work together to get specific things done, however this can be a problem as each job role effects the other one as they usually rely on one another.

production schedule example.

Mock question answer:

A production schedule would be a suitable project management tool to consider using since production schedules clearly state each task that needs to be completed in order to produce the final product. Games-ed have only 4 months to create the game, therefore this project movement tool will be suitable to use as the production schedule will help the Road safety team manage their time properly due to denoted milestones and timeframes being planned out before, the production schedule also factors in delays due to it having contingencies meaning it will be fairly easy to stay on the right tracks during the production of the product, heling it be ready for the desired launch date.

Saturday 3 November 2018

ProgressmediaUK evaluation.

A production schedule is an effective tool to consider using for the production of this app, due to the fact that production schedules clearly state each step that needs to be competed in order to create the final product. It consists of dates, milestones, timeframes, contingencies and the tasks that need to be completed. A production schedule works in a similar way to a to do list, which is effective as it creates motivation due to providing a goal to work towards.  This is because as once a task is completed, it can be ticked off the list meaning you're one step closer to having the final product finished.  The fact that all tasks are shown before the product is produced is also useful as it means you can gather all the materials / resources you need to create it, allowing you to be more prepared for the production stage. Delays can be handled due to the fact that the production schedule factors in contingencies, this will be effective for ProgressmediaUK as they want their app ready for April.  Therefore, they won't have to waste time thinking of backup plan meaning they can be more confident in having the app ready for the desired launch date.  However, the fact that everything is planned out before the production stage can be a problem since milestones and dates may be hard to predict, meaning the launch date could be affected if timings are wrongly assigned.

Another reason that a production schedule is effective is due to them being cost effective as all you need to create a production schedule is a piece of paper, a printer, a computer / digital device and digital software such as Microsoft Word in which the production schedule can be created.  In this way, a production schedule would be beneficial to ProgressmediaUK as it seems they are a small independent company due to them only having three members of staff: Ian, Ella and Josh, meaning they may not have a huge budget to spend on planning materials.  By using a production schedule they’re able to save money and have an effective plan to creating the final product. Due to the way production schedules are made, they are also easy to edit and are adaptable, which is another benefit that makes production schedules effective as this means less time is wasted on creating other planning materials. The fact that the production schedule can be easily edited is relevant and an advantage to ProgressmediaUK as Michel wants the app to be ready for April.  By using a production schedule the team don’t have to worry about wasting time on things such as creating completely new production schedules, allowing them to spend more time focusing on creating the actual app ready for the date they want it released, however, although the production schedule does consist of elements such as the tasks, dates, timeframes, contingencies and milestones that need to be completed, it doesn't cover everything, for example a visualisation digram would also need to be used as the production schedule does not visually show what the app is going to look like.

The company ProgressmediaUk consists of three members, therefore a production schedule can be beneficial to use as they’re relevant to everyone due to them showing all tasks that need to be completed. This is an advantage as it allows each team member to know exactly what everyone has to do in order to make the final product, allowing them to work well as a team. However, production schedules can be vague in what they say, possibly making it confusing or hard for everyone to completely understand their job roles and therefore the tasks need to be very clear for each individual. Secondly, because there are various team members, the production schedule would have to be accessible to everyone, therefore there should be multiple prints of it and it should uploaded to a place where everyone can see it such as OneDrive or on email.

Lo3 - Production schedule feedback.
